Just watched the season finale of Supernatural, so I’m dressing up to make myself feel better. I don’t think I can wait until season 10…

BRAIN SCIENCE BEHIND ANOREXIA
With today’s fashion magazine constantly portray a thinner body as more beautiful, its no wonder many teenage girls fall victim to anorexia. What most people probably don’t know is that anorexia is so strong it can alter normal brain function. The brain scan of an anorexic person versus a healthy person is drastically different.
- A painful pang of hunger can be downgraded in an anorexic person so that it is barely felt.
- When anorexic patients were asked to imagine eating French fries, there was high activity in the center of self-control in the brain. This region serves to shut down impulsive behaviors. It would make a tasty dish of salty French fries seem unappetizing.
- Dopamine, a hormone that gives a person their “natural high” and makes them feel happy, elicits anxiety in an anorexic person. So a chocolate bar that would normally elicit joy in a healthy person, elicits distress in an anorexic person.
These reasons explain why anorexic people are turned off by food. They just don’t see it the same way normal people do.
